International Day of Democracy 2026

On September 15, the world observes International Day of Democracy, a day dedicated to celebrating democratic governance and reaffirming the values that underpin free, inclusive and just societies.

For Grenada, democracy is rooted in participation and inclusion, equality and justice, human rights, the rule of law and sustainable development. Every person is entitled to live in a society that provides safety, opportunity and the conditions necessary to thrive.

As a society shaped by our history and our emergence from slavery and colonization, Grenada’s democracy continues to evolve. It is guided by the experiences, culture, aspirations and sovereign will of our people, as we continue to define the kind of democracy we want for our nation.

Our Constitution, the institutions of Government and Parliament, and the values that underpin them continue to provide the framework within which our democracy develops. We remain committed to advancing social equality, the just application of the law, and access to food, education, safety and opportunity for all.

International Day of Democracy 2026, reminds us that every Grenadian counts. The responsibility for protecting and strengthening our democracy rests in our hands. Each of us is both a builder and beneficiary of democracy.

Through the making of laws, consideration and oversight of the national budget, and the exercise of parliamentary oversight, Grenada’s Parliament makes an important contribution to our national democracy.

The Houses of Parliament warmly salute democratic societies, governments, institutions and peoples across the world. We extend particular appreciation to like-minded parliamentary institutions, including the Parliaments of the Americas, and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, whose partnership and engagement continue to enrich Grenada’s maturing democracy.
